A Cute, New Game To Unravel

Posted by on Feb 5, 2016

The current trend in the video game industry is getting a little old. A majority of new, popular video games have a plot based on war and assassination. This makes people who are fairly inexperienced in the video game world feel as if they’re too late to the party. Almost all new or upcoming games are building off an existing series, so It’s refreshing to hear about a new release with an original plot. Too many games require getting a team together, either locally or online. Personally, when I desire to play a video game, I’m seeking solitude. I want a fun, one player game to escape in and feel good about. Similar in style to Sony’s Little Big Planet is a game that I may find to be quite enjoyable – called Unravel. Unravel has been developed by Coldwood Interactive and published by Electronic Arts. The character you play in this quirky, puzzle platform style game is named Yarny. He is an adorable, tomato colored creature. His bodily structure is made of red yarn (that’s why his name is Yarny....

His bodily structure is made of red yarn (that’s why his name is Yarny. Get it?). The player must use the string of his body, in almost any way you can think of, and the general laws of physics to maneuver about and overcome the obstacles of each level. As you progress through a level, your character (Yarny) begins to unravel. To avoid losing yourself (and the level), you must collect clumps of yarn that you will find along the way. In Unravel, a silent story is told about a family that has drifted apart, through the eyes of this little yarn figure. I say “a silent story” because there is no voice dialogue at any point in the game – only visible flashbacks and musical mood. The ambiance of Unravel is kind of a nostalgic bittersweet. The music is (mostly) serene. According to Unravel’s official website, the artwork in the game was inspired by shots of nature in northern Scandinavia. The game will likely stir emotions of happiness and sadness, similar to a Disney Pixar animated movie. Unravel looks like it will be a wonderful, heart-felt game. Anyone who would be delighted to participate in this...

Overwatch

Overwatch

Feb 3, 2016

Perhaps you’ve heard of Blizzard Entertainment – the developers of a globally known MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) titled World of Warcraft. In the gaming world, Blizzard Entertainment is a big name. That’s why their upcoming multiplayer experience, Overwatch, is expected to be a successful release. A lucky few Blizzard Entertainment fans who live in the USA or Europe have been invited to give Overwatch a spin in its beta version, beginning October 27, 2015. For the rest of us, an official release date is still up in the air. An online source suggests that a select group of hopefuls in Asia might have the opportunity to play in beta version at some point before the final release. The game is expected to be ready for the world to play be on platforms PC, XBOX ONE, and Play Station 4 sometime during the first half of 2016. Overwatch is a futuristic first-person shooter that will be available to play with friends locally or online. There are several different characters to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The characters come in four classes: offense, defense, tank, and support. You and five friends form a group to battle the opposing team, choosing your characters carefully. Since each character has their own specific abilities and downfalls, strategic skills are required to form the best possible team. The game takes place during a conflict that has affected the world. An artificial intelligence has attempted to rule, and humans must fight to preserve their planet. The chaos has gotten so out of hand that the United Nations formed a neutral task force to watch over the world and reconstruct peace, hence the name “Overwatch”. The amount of game play that has been recorded is limited, but the trailer gives the impression that it has a similar “feel” to the Halo series – except for the witty characters and gorilla named Winston. The video below will give you a humorous preview of the entertainment you can soon enjoy from Overwatch. If you’d like to reserve a copy and purchase it ahead of time, Overwatch has been open for pre-order since November 6,...

Play Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. For Some Steam-Powered Fun!

Every video game company has the tendency to follow a certain trend in the style of their games. For example, XBOX offers primarily bloody war games (or as I call them, “shooty shooty bang-bang”) with some exceptions, of course. Nintendo games are on the other end of the spectrum – family friendly, “cute”, and their developers do not strive to make the gameplay look “realistic”. Any Nintendo enthusiast will tell you that the company’s games are somewhat distinct – they have a certain “feel” that separates them from others. One of Nintendo’s newer releases has a “feel” that steers in a slightly different direction. The game has a theme that mixes steam punk with American history. The game play and captions have a moving comic book style. Fighting is done in the form of turn based combat and strategy. It’s called Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. The story begins in London, on the day that the Steamgate Bridge is opening. You are at the American embassy when your beloved city is unexpectedly attacked by an unidentified enemy. You come in contact with a ship named Lady Liberty, captained by President Abraham Lincoln. He informs you that the enemy is a mysterious alien. You and your newly formed team must be quick to take action before London is completely swallowed. Your wit and steam-powered weapons assist you in defeating the extraterrestrial menaces. The force put in charge of the heroic mission is named S.T.E.A.M., which stands for “Strike Team Eliminating the Alien Menace”. Henry Fleming is the man who everyone considers the “team leader”. Captain Abe, Lion, Tiger Lily, Tom Sawyer, Randolph Carter, Queequeg, John Henry, Scarecrow, The Fox, and Califia all comprise the alien butt kicking team known as S.T.E.A.M. Each character has an individual personality and weapon, and you must use strategy to decide which characters for each mission. When a level begins, the player can pick up to four characters. Your weapons and movement are powered by steam. On the bottom of your screen, there is a “steam meter” that decreases as you move about and utilize your weapons. As you move about the levels, you collect gears and medals. While they’re used to...

Nintendo Brings You A Unique Gaming Experience

Nintendo Brings You A Unique Gaming Experience

Over the past few years, the new video game releases we see advertised tend to be centered around war. Games such as Metal Gear Solid and Call of Duty receive mature ratings for the graphic bloodshed seen by the player. Mind you, such games have a tremendous following and are financially successful. The downside is that game developers seem to have narrowed their target audience down significantly by shifting a significant amount of their talent and energy into violent content. This leaves video game fans who enjoy more light hearted fun, such as families and squeamish folks (like myself), in the dark. This realization is the true core of what makes Nintendo so special. My boyfriend is in the living room slashing limbs off virtual enemies in Assassin’s Creed and brewing anger when the screen turns red. I, on the other hand, am comfortably snuggled in my warm bed with my shiny, purple Nintendo 3DS. You may not see these games advertised on television, but believe it or not, there are plenty of options for people like myself. The peaceful, happy-go-lucky music can frolic through my Powerpuff Girls headphones as I explore the virtual world of Animal Crossing. If I’m in the mood for a heavy dose of nostalgia, I pop in The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time 3D. Maybe my emotions need a break, but my brain could use a little exercise – that’s when I play a relaxing puzzle game such as Brain Age. One of my all-time favorite pass time activities is to kick back with one of the sharpest-minded characters in the Nintendo universe – Professor Hershel Layton. There is one key word you hear in a majority of video game reviews – “graphics”. Game critics have an obsession with how advanced the pictures are of a game. If you’re looking for a fancy gaming experience on-the-go, the Nintendo 3DS games can be played in 3D without the need for red and blue glasses. Talk about a console that really STANDS OUT (see what I did there?). If you are hoping to feed your video game cravings, on-the-go, without being forced to choose between bloody game number one or...

Many games have accumulated a large following, earned the loyalty of passionate players, and raked in big bucks. Will “The Ring” Series See A Third Movie?

Will “The Ring” Series See A Third Movie?

Jan 28, 2016

In the year 2002, an American version of a Japanese horror film was released. Based off the movie Ringu, The Ring is a horror / psychological thriller about a VHS tape with a curse attached to it. Anyone who dares to view the tape’s footage would undoubtedly die exactly one week later. It is rumored that exactly seven days after viewing the tape, the ghost of a small girl will appear on the television screen and steal the life of the viewer. A local journalist named Rachel Keller (played by Naomi Watts) takes it upon herself to unravel the mystery of the tape when several teenagers of the town, including one of Rachel’s loved ones, were found to have caught the bait and fallen victim to the dreadful curse. Unfortunately, Rachel has to watch the tape in order to get a lead in her investigation, making herself and her son a target for the ghost. She has exactly seven days to stop the curse before the race ends and her life is taken. The Ring was a hit among horror film fans in America. This resulted in the release of The Ring Two – a continuance of the investigation. With help from Rachel’s new friend, Sam, she hoped to successfully bring this case to a close once and for all. Rachel has confirmed that the ghost is a small girl named Samara, who was murdered by her parents long ago. Rachel’s seven days have come and gone, meaning she is bound to be hunted at any moment. In The Ring Two, dark details of Samara’s life and the tape’s background are discovered. It seemed that The Ring Two brought the story of Samara’s haunting to an end, but rumors are spreading around the internet of a third movie. What more is there to add to the story? According to the seemingly incomplete imdb.com profile of “Rings” (also referred to as The Ring Three and Rings 3D), Naomi Watts will not be returning to the screen as Rachel. Samara will be played by a much older actress than in the previous two movies, and a couple release dates are floating around the web. The trailer...

Risen

Risen

Jan 27, 2016

When a recently buried body disappears, Roman military figure Clavius (played by Joseph Fiennes) is given orders to take charge and get to the bottom of it. Pressure builds for Clavius as the Emperor is expected to arrive anytime. The Roman military believes that the believers of Christ swiped the body from its tomb. Rumors are spreading that the body was not stolen, but the dead man has risen. Clavius finds himself uncertain of what he truly believes. Risen tells the biblical story of Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the unique perspective of one of the men who killed him. We have all heard the story of Jesus Christ. He was born to Mary Magdalene, who was said to be a virgin. Most of us have learned many details of what his life was supposedly like growing up. As an adult, he told the world who he was – the son of God. There were people who had faith in him, but many did not. He was ultimately crucified for claiming to be the son of God. As the story goes, Jesus rose from the grave three days after his body was placed in the tomb to be sealed. In the film industry, there have been countless movies made about Jesus. Viewers may hear about this movie and think “great, ANOTHER bible movie!”, but Risen appears to have an appealing difference. Almost all of the other “Jesus movies” are primarily focused on the events that lead to Jesus’ death, or the mere fact that he was crucified. Little is told about what happens afterwards – Risen is different in that sense. It is unique in the way it tells the story of Christ. The main character is not Jesus himself, but a well-respected member of the Roman military named Clavius. The story is not told as a significant point in one religion’s background, but as a historical manhunt. This may not come as a surprise to many, but bloodshed is expected to be seen in this movie. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has rated Risen PG-13 for “biblical violence, including some disturbing images”. This exciting film is set to release in America on...

The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book

Jan 26, 2016

A human boy has been orphaned and left in the jungle. With no parents, his only hope for survival is a pack of wolves who raise him as one of their own. As the boy, named Mowgli, grows a little older, he discovers that there are some species of the animal kingdom who are far less caring than his wolf elders. Mowgli is faced with a decision far more difficult than a boy so young should have to make – stay in the jungle where he must ultimately learn to fend for himself, or seek the unfamiliar world of human civilization. From the director who brought you Iron Man (Jon Favreau), the classic story of The Jungle Book has been re-imagined using the latest CGI technology. The Jungle Book is a title which multiple generations may recognize. It began as a child’s story. In 1967, Disney turned the book into a light-hearted cartoon movie with lots of laughs, singing, and dancing. Set to release April 15, 2016, The Jungle Book in its newest form may bring a different feel to the audience. There is currently only one trailer that has been exposed to the public. In the trailer, the only character’s voice you hear is the giant snake named Kaa (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). We know that there is more dialogue by the cast list on imdb.com. Bill Murray is the voice actor who plays Baloo, the friendly bear who worries that human civilization isn’t in Mowgli’s best interest. The audience gets to hear Christopher Walken’s voice as King Louie, the “king of the apes”. Idris Elba brings words to Shere Khan, the villain tiger who despises all humans and wishes death upon Mowgli. On the other hand, the music is deep and intense behind several screenshots of little light. Will this version of The Jungle Book have a dark feel? According to a published interview with director Jon Favreau (via twitter), they team hopes to preserve the older generations’ nostalgia with a certain amount of music while placing the new film into the “action” genre. With limited footage, it is difficult to predict the movie’s tone. Fans will be able to make their...
